Listening is the key

Cornelius Reid was fond of saying about voice lessons, "We are primarily engaged in ear training here." I presumed for years that I knew what he meant. I had no clue.

In the past year, I have come to some deep realizations about the process of LISTENING. True listening, that is. Not what usually passes for listening in our world, in which the pure act of listening has an overlay of thinking and judging. We think about whether we like a sound or not. Whether it is good or bad. Whether we are doing well.

There are so many directions our thoughts can take us, and all of those roads lead away from the purity of learning and being our brilliant selves. And away from ease and joy.

Learn to listen and you will unleash your best voice and have fun in the process.
